How to use the microphone test
Click "Start microphone," allow browser access, then simply talk, tap the mic, or clap. The bar meter and waveform above will move in real time if your microphone is picking up sound. If you have multiple microphones connected, a dropdown lets you select and test each one individually.
Why test your microphone
A dead or muted mic is one of the most common — and most embarrassing — video call problems, usually discovered only after you've been talking to a silent room. Testing beforehand takes ten seconds and avoids that entirely. It's also useful for confirming a new headset works, or diagnosing a suddenly-quiet mic.
Troubleshooting a microphone that isn't picking up sound
- Meter doesn't move at all: check your OS sound settings — the correct input device may not be selected, or the input volume may be set very low.
- Permission prompt never appeared: your browser may already have mic access blocked for this site; check the site settings via the icon in your address bar.
- Works here but not in a call app: the app itself likely has the wrong microphone selected in its own audio settings.
- Very quiet or distorted signal: try moving closer to the mic, or check if a physical mute switch (common on headsets) is engaged.

Why does the meter move slightly even in silence?
A small amount of background noise or electrical noise floor is completely normal for most microphones — what matters is that the meter rises clearly when you speak.
Can I test a Bluetooth headset microphone?
